Strigino Summing up Winter Operations

The Airfield Service of the Strigino International Airport (member of the Airports of Regions Holding) summarized operations in winter season of 2018-2019. Over 40 thousand cubic meters of snow were removed and exported from aprons and taxiways of the Nizhniy Novgorod airport. Special equipment had to make more than a thousand trips to this end. The snow period started last year even before the formal start of winter navigation: snow removal machines went to the apron on October 28. It is worth to note that the scope of work rose by more than 30% against the like period of the last year: the area of flatwork coverings to be cleaned grew from 353,713 m2 to 469,842 m2 after renovation of the aerodrome infrastructure (aprons, parking lots, runways and taxiways). This is more than the area of 63 soccer fields. 31 January 2019 became the most challenging workday, when 7 mm of precipitation fell in the form of freezing rain and snow. The Nizhniy Novgorod airport has never stopped operations because of snow or ice. Aerodrome infrastructure is cleaned 24 hours a day. According to current standards, the maximum height of newly fallen snow should not be above 12 mm to maintain airfield airworthiness. That’s why the machinery starts patrolling when first signs of snowfall appear, maintaining cleanness of the runway, taxiways, parking points and apron irrespective of the time of day.
